Beyond The Books, KUTV’s award winning education investigative unit, continued to education stories and uncover issues that affected your children’s education in 2021.
The unit, which began 4 years ago, started with an Emmy award winning investigation into a controversial school board member who repeatedly posted questionable social media posts, and made concerning comments at multiple meetings.
Over the years, BTB has dedicated numerous stories to education spending, corruption and safety issues in Utah schools.
The last 2 years have been particularly active for the unit, helmed by investigative reporter Chris Jones and investigative producer Nadia Pflaum. The COVID-9 pandemic, along with the raging debate over critical race theory and masks in the classroom, kept Beyond The Books busy.
This year, BTB continued to produce stories that impact you and your kids at school. Watch the video to see some of our best stories this year, including how teachers are quitting and posting their experiences on social media. BTB also confronted the superintendent of Davis Schools after the organization was investigated by the US Department of Justice, accused of perpetuating an environment hostile to students of color. BTB also dug into the supply chain issues affecting schools, book banning and critical race theory.
