NEW ULM — A National Weather Service (NWS) forecast of heavy snow from midnight Thursday night through tonight (Friday) caused a number of schools to announce Thursday they would close today.
Sleepy Eye Public Schools announced it is closing today due to incoming weather and will have a digital (learning) day. Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s School will also be closed today.
New Ulm Public Schools did not have classes scheduled for today, according to the school calendar. A staff workshop is scheduled for the day.
Minnesota Valley Lutheran, New Ulm Area Catholic Schools and Gibbon-Fairfax-Wi n t h r o p announced later in the afternoon that they would be closed today.
With the threat of winter weather approaching Friday, several area games from Friday were moved up to Thursday.
The National Weather Service forecast for today calls for snow that could be heavy at times, with patchy, blowing snow after 3 p.m. New snow accumulation of 5 to 9 inches was possible during the day, with another inch possible at night.
